OTD Capstone Projects

Abstract

This doctoral capstone project was completed in partnership with Neuro Therapy Nashville (NTN), a privately owned, outpatient neurologic rehabilitation clinic in Brentwood, TN. NTN offers occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and counseling services to individuals with acquired brain injuries, with an emphasis on stroke, concussion, and vision remediation. The goal of the project was to increase access and availability of evidence informed resources for vision remediation and occupational therapy for individuals with acquired brain injuries. The outcomes of the project include a pilot research study which will be used to inform future analysis of vision remediation in occupational therapy, a variety of patient, caregiver, and clinician resources regarding acquired brain injuries, and completion of the Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Professional (CSRP) and Certified Functional Vision Rehabilitation Specialist (CFVRS) certifications. Additional elements of the project include delivery of an in-service sharing the latest research trends and emerging treatment techniques for vision remediation based on the CFVRS certification and the VisCon Vision Rehab Summit, and development of an adaptive cooking club focused on safety and participation in the kitchen after brain injury. Through collaboration with the capstone student and implementation of the project goals, NTN has been able to expand its resource offerings, expand clinician knowledge in vision rehabilitation, and support improved participation and safety outcomes for individuals with acquired brain injuries.
