OTD Capstone Projects
Abstract
This doctoral capstone project was completed through a partnership with Gilda’s Club of Middle Tennessee, a non-profit organization focused on creating a sense of community and support for individuals who are impacted by cancer. The focus of this project was to develop a resource for members that addressed executive functioning changes that occur with chemo brain with a goal of making it both applicable and user friendly. The deliverable sought to provide members with basic tips and tricks for improving their quality of life. Utilizing an occupational lens, this manual contains practical strategies to address decreased memory, cognitive fatigue, processing speed, changes in behavior, higher level cognitive functions, and more. The deliverable also includes avenues for self-advocacy with both medical professionals and under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The process for project completion included a thorough literature review and profile of the agency to create an evidence-based deliverable. This process also included collaboration with agency members to ensure relevancy and an in-person informational, questions and answers session to create a sense of community surrounding the topic. The effectiveness of the deliverable and group was measured using member post-group surveys.
