Description

What if home were a single room, not a single room in a shack or a one room house, but a single room, with no access to anything else? What if you had lived your whole life in such a room, indeed did not know that anything beyond “room” was real? This is the situation of a young woman who has been imprisoned in just such a place for seven years, during which she has given birth to a son for whom she has somehow managed to create a sense of home and normalcy, making the subsequent escape from their prison in many ways as difficult for mother and son as the familiar if horrifying life they lived before. As Patterson of The Guardian wrote in his review of the 2015 film Room, “All this should be distressing but, amazingly, [the film is]…uplifting” despite its “squalid and agonizing subject.” Discussion of both the challenging and inspiring issues the film engages will follow
