Description
This recipient of the 2001 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film, in German with English subtitles, is based on an autobiographical novel about a Jewish family which fled Germany for Kenya to try to make a new life, and home. Father, mother and daughter respond to Africa in varied and changing ways, differences which threaten to do as much as the war soon raging in Europe to pull the family apart. Like many refugee families, eventually the family must confront the question of whether to return “home” or not, a question among others that will be tackled in the discussion following the film.
