Abstract
This research examines the key factors that predict the likelihood of a successful appeal in U.S. circuit courts. Focusing on the type of appeal, sentencing guidelines, and the circuit court’s location, this study employs logistic regression analysis on a dataset from the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and the United States Sentencing Commission, specifically analyzing federal criminal convictions and sentences data for 2012. This approach aims to identify the factors that significantly increase the probability of a favorable appeal outcome.
