Abstract

Many people exhibit resilience at some point in their life. This is an especially crucial characteristic for college students as they encounter new experiences, challenges, and major life changes. However, existing resilience measures are geared towards populations of adults who have experienced specific adverse experiences, often neglecting the specific challenges faced by college students. The present study aims to develop and validate a new measure of resilience that is geared toward the experiences of college students. Studies with existing scales of resilience and protective factors found that social support and coping skills were significantly positively related to resilience. Therefore, our scale of resilience consists of items that focus on one’s support system and ability to cope with adverse experiences. Our study consists of fifty-two (N=52) current college students whose data was collected through an online survey via Qualtrics. Participants completed our survey and a previously validated survey of resilience and protective factors. Results and discussion are forthcoming.
