Summary

The central focus surrounding the content in this learning segment is to have students learn the key signatures that use four or less sharps or flats to identify do in a given piece or segment of music. Students will do so through gaining knowledge of the notes on the staff, identifying both sharps and flats, utilizing the circle of fifths, and understanding the relationship between a key signature and the note that is labeled “do”. Each of these musical concepts have scattered and varied understandings within the class, so this central focus ties together each of them for the tangible goal of identifying “do” through an understanding of key signatures. For this content, focus will be placed on key signatures containing four or less sharps or flats, as that is what most of their music and sightreading examples contain. Research was carried out through lectures, written work, group discussion, games, and musical experiential learning.
