Summary
“Make Your Dress Dance Again” is a student-led service-learning initiative developed by Honors Global Fashion students at Belmont University. The project was created to address issues of equity, access, and sustainability within formalwear. Many high school students in Metro Nashville face financial barriers when preparing for events like prom, while countless formal garments are worn only once and then discarded or left unused. To respond to this need, students launched the “Dance Again – Glow Shine Collective (D.A.G.S. Collective),” a project centered on reuse, confidence, and community impact. The initiative combines environmental responsibility with social good by redistributing gently used formalwear through a boutique-style experience. This approach ensures that students not only receive a dress, but also enjoy a dignified and joyful selection process. The project also strengthens partnerships between Belmont University and Metro Nashville Public Schools, creating meaningful connections between college students and the local community while promoting sustainable fashion practices. As part of this initiative, our team organized and carried out a dress collection and redistribution effort. We collected over 63 gently used prom and formal garments from donors within the community. Each item was sorted, organized, and prepared to be presented in a boutique-style setting. We collaborated as a team to manage all aspects of the project, including outreach, collection, organization, and event planning. Our goal was to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where high school students could choose a dress for prom or other formal events with confidence and excitement. Through this process, we applied leadership, teamwork, and project management skills while addressing real-world issues such as textile waste and access to formalwear. The experience allowed us to turn classroom learning into meaningful community impact, helping ensure that every dress and every student gets a chance to shine again.
