Summary
As artificial intelligence becomes more common in educational spaces, theatre educators must consider how these tools can be used responsibly, ethically, and effectively in classroom instruction. This study explores the role of large language model (LLM)-based AI tools as supports for idea generation in the theatre classroom, with a particular focus on scriptwriting. Through research on the history, ethics, controversies, strengths, and limitations of AI in both theatre and education, this presentation examines how AI can function not as a replacement for student creativity, but as a collaborative brainstorming partner. Drawing on interviews with current scriptwriting professors, guided testing of AI tools for script concept development, and the creation of an original script developed primarily through AI-assisted idea generation, this research asks: how can theatre educators use AI as a starting point for creative work without diminishing authorship, originality, or the human voice at the center of storytelling?
