Summary
Overlooked urban spaces, such as alleyways, can provide many valuable ecosystem services. This project directly observes urban alleyways in hopes of exploring the range of ecosystem services offered. The project will be carried out by visiting a few alleyways within the Nashville area. Ecosystem services will be evaluated by physical observation and documentation. The alleyways will be photographed, and data based on the observations will be collected and analyzed. Ecosystem services provided by urban alleyways include urban heat island mitigation with green infrastructure, habitat support, and cultural and recreational benefits offered to the surrounding residents. These urban spaces demonstrate how small and overlooked areas can make positive contributions to ecosystems and to the overall well-being of the people living around these areas. This project encourages people to reevaluate how they are using ordinary spaces such as alleyways and recognize how these underappreciated spaces can be benefitable to the environment, and their physical and emotional wellbeing.
