OTD Capstone Projects

Abstract

This doctoral capstone project was conducted in collaboration with Centennial Adultcare Center, an adult day program that is dedicated to providing a stimulating and supportive environment for personal growth and independence through professional care within a reasonable fee. The center serves a variety of diagnosis including but not limited to: dementia, cerebral palsy, intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), stroke, and autism. The primary objectives of this project were to develop engaging, member-focused activities through the use of graded interventions and adaptive equipment, provide staff members with effective resources, and enhance the visibility and promotion of adult day services through social media outreach. These objectives were developed in response to low levels of social participation and engagement observed throughout the center. Promoting engagement not only enhances overall quality of life, but also supports the maintenance of functional abilities among members. The final outcomes resulted in a comprehensive activity handbook including large-group physical and cognitive activities, as well as,small-group activities. The data states that the percentage of members engaged increased from 34.8% to 82.5%. Additionally, a staff activity facilitation presentation was developed for use in new staff onboarding procedures. To promote outreach, social media posts were also posted daily to highlight the center’s programming and increase awareness of the value of adult day services.
