OTD Capstone Projects

Abstract

This capstone project was completed in collaboration with MOVE Inclusive Dance, a nonprofit, inclusive dance studio specifically serving individuals of all ages with various disabilities. A needs assessment conducted with the staff at MOVE necessitated a cohesive teacher manual, including teacher training protocol, disability index, safety precautions, sample class activities, curriculum guide, and more. The focus of this capstone was to create and distribute a teacher training manual to dance teachers at MOVE Inclusive Dance. The teacher training manual was created using anonymous pre and post test qualitative and quantitative surveys to assess teacher perceptions regarding feelings of confidence and preparedness in teaching an inclusive dance class. The implementation of a teacher training manual was effective in improving teacher confidence and preparedness for teaching an inclusive dance class at MOVE. Major aims of the teacher training manual were to increase parent/caregiver satisfaction with dance class, improve student engagement in classes, and improve teacher ability to adapt class activities to each student’s unique needs. Additional areas of focus throughout this Capstone experience included assisting in creation of a sensory corner for student use and grant writing for various potential funding sources.
