Abstract
For centuries, female composers have struggled for recognition in a male-dominated field, and those who did publish were typically in privileged positions. However, in recent years, more efforts have been put forth to uncover these unsung heroines; anthologies of women's music have been curated and analyzed and continue to bring awareness to the works of these amazing women. These are necessary contributions, but there is still a void to be filled, particularly regarding women from the United States in the early twentieth century. Therefore, this research provides historical, musical, lyrical, and pedagogical information on the solo vocal music of multiple prominent American women composers who published music between 1900 and 1950. The goals of this paper are to provide a thorough resource for voice teachers and voice students that will allow for female American representation in their repertoire; provide a listing of lesser-known contemporary classical art songs that are easy to access; educate any current or aspiring musician about the lives, works, and styles of American women composers; and fill the void of art song anthologies for American women composers.
