Protective Stewardship in the Multispace: A Proposed Secondary Data Analysis of Practical Wisdom and Professional Virtue Formation Among VA School Certifying Officials

Abstract

Pending Belmont University IRB approval, this proposed qualitative secondary analysis will draw upon interview data originally collected for a doctoral dissertation examining the professional role and boundary-spanning experiences of VA School Certifying Officials (SCOs) to explore questions related to practical wisdom, protective stewardship, and professional virtue formation. Drawing on theories of practical wisdom, protective stewardship, virtue formation, and boundary spanning, the study will analyze de-identified interview transcripts from a prior interpretive phenomenological analysis of SCOs. The research will explore how participants' accounts of navigating the multispace reflect the enactment of practical wisdom through protective stewardship and in what ways these accounts may suggest opportunities for professional virtue formation. By focusing on the ethical and relational dimensions of boundary-spanning administrative work, the study seeks to contribute to conversations about character formation and communities of character within higher education. Findings will be exploratory and conceptual in nature.
