Abstract

As Nashville continues to grow exponentially, many neighborhoods are being quickly developed. Buchanan Arts District is a fast-developing part of North Nashville that has fallen victim to gentrification and out of town developers building things that do not reflect the community’s needs. Not only are residents being pushed out of their community, but the new development does not reflect the history, values, or feeling of the existing neighborhood. This feeling or mental image of the district can be described as the sense of place. Sense of place consists of a wide range of connections or feelings that are associated with a specific location or environment. Many cities have it, and many need it. In this presentation, I will attempt explore the 5 elements of Buchanan Street and provide potential ways to enhance the sense of place.
