Abstract
What allows totalitarian governments to survive, even thrive? The scholarly debate focuses on their social control of citizens as well as the economic performance of the country. I argue that the longevity of totalitarian governments is best explained by all three elements of control: social, political, and economic. This will be measured through an analysis of the economy as well as a measurement of political and social control used. I will perform a regression analysis on the survival of the different types of control to gauge their relative effect.
