Students, staff, and faculty from Belmont University have worked to prepare this devotional guide. As a community of faith, we live, work, and learn together. It is our hope that this guide adds richness and joy to your Christmas season.

Advent is an ancient celebration of the Church that focuses on the way God once came in Christ and continues to come to us through the Holy Spirit. It also anticipates the day when Jesus Christ returns in glory. Even though much of our anticipation revolves around the gifts that we might receive from family and friends, Advent is a way that we can focus on the gift of Jesus that came and is coming again.

This guide has instructions for daily devotions during this season. You are encouraged to read scripture, a brief devotion, and pray each day as you prepare your heart for Christmas.

I am grateful to the students, staff, and faculty who have contributed to the guide. I offer my gratitude to Dan McAlexander, the Provost of Belmont University, for his support of this project. Dan Johnson, Associate Professor of Art, deserves a special thanks for his cover design and publication of the guide. I also especially thank Vernona Elliott, Office Manager for the School of Religion. She has made this project come to reality by preparing all of the text.

Read and enjoy! May you know the special blessing of Christ’s presence this Advent season, and may you experience the greatest Christmas of your life!

Blessings,

Dr. Darrell Gwaltney
