The students, staff, and faculty of Belmont University are an amazing community of people seeking to be faithful to God. We come from all over the United States and from various parts of the world. Every year, advent helps prepare us for the final weeks of the semester, for exams, and for graduation. It is very appropriate that this guide brings the calendar year to a close. In the midst of our demanding schedules, we long for the peace of Jesus.

A quick check of the evening news, a glance at the newspaper, or even a brief look at any internet news site reminds us that we live in a broken world. Advent is an ancient celebration of the Church that focuses on the way God once came in Christ and continues to come to us through the Holy Spirit. Advent also anticipates the day when Jesus Christ returns in glory. The once and future coming of Jesus is God’s way of responding to the world’s brokenness and helping us rediscover a time of peace for everyone.

This guide has instructions for daily devotions during this season. You are encouraged to read scripture, the brief devotion, and pray each day as you prepare your heart for Christmas.

I am grateful to the students, staff, and faculty who have contributed to the guide. I offer my gratitude to Dan McAlexander, the Provost of Belmont University, for his support of this project. I also especially thank Vernona Elliott, Office Manager for the School of Religion. Her faithful service has made this guide a reality.

Read and enjoy! May the presence of the risen Christ come into your life this Advent season and bring you comfort beyond measure. May all you do in the coming days prepare you for the greatest Christmas of your life!

Blessings,

Dr. Darrell Gwaltney
