Abstract
The environment can have effects on humans mentally and physically. Nature has been shown to have many benefits such as reducing stress, stabilizing blood pressure, and improving cognitive functions (Heiskanen, 2022). This study aims to look at how different environment affect our cognition, specifically in working memory. The purpose of this research is to be able to see if there is a certain environment that improves working memory and generalize the found data to areas such as classrooms or work environments to make them better fit for learning or performing in. In this study we use virtual reality to display different environments. The tasks consist of different variations of the Backwards Digit Span to test working memory, including Letter Span and Word span. Our data is being collected but we anticipate that the Natural Environment will help improve performance on working memory tasks more than the Urban Environment.
