Abstract

Mosquitoes pose an important public health risk because they can spread infectious diseases. Therefore, it is critical we understand how the presence and abundance of mosquito species varies in different geographic areas. In this study, we examined how presence and abundance of mosquito species varied in three Nashville, TN metro parks that span an urban to rural gradient. Over a period of 6 weeks, we collected mosquitoes and identified them to the species level. Using this approach, we found that mosquito presence and abundance varied spatially across the three parks. Our findings indicate that exposure to disease-carrying mosquito species may vary in Nashville’s parks and across an urban to rural gradient.
