Abstract
Recent research has suggested that local garden centers may help promote the spread of invasive species. However, there has been little research done in many geographic areas to determine how these local garden centers may contribute to their spread to local areas over time. In this study, we documented the number of exotic and invasive plant species that were for sale at two large garden centers in Davidson County, TN – Home Depot and Lowes. In addition, we used iNaturalist, a citizen science application, to determine if any of the exotic or invasive species sold at Home Depot and Lowes had spread across Davidson County metro parks. Our findings suggest that both Home Depot and Lowes commonly sell exotic and invasive species and that several of the species they sell are found as invaders in Davidson County, TN parks. Collectively, our findings suggest that both Home Depot and Lowes have the potential to contribute to the local spread of exotic and invasive plants in Davidson County.
