Abstract

Good sleep quality, physical activity, and nutrition are very important in everyday lives and help humans function to the best of their ability. The prevalence of chronic sleep disorders in the US is estimated at 50 to 70 million people (World Health Organization). Regular exercise and good nutrition habits have been shown to increase sleep quality and duration (World Health Organization). Further understanding of nutrition-based habits and physical activity regarding sleep can lead to interventions, education, and habitual changes to increase individuals’ well-being in the future. We wanted to look at if eating habits and physical activity correlated with better sleep quality. Belmont undergraduate students (N = 40) completed demographic questions as well as the Diet and Behavior Scale, Sleep Quality Scale, and the Godin Leisure- Time Exercise Questionnaire online. Neither dietary habits nor physical activity were correlated with sleep quality. There could be modifications made to the study to better assess these variables. However, we saw that physical activity and nutritional habits do not have a significant impact on sleep quality. This information can be helpful when looking at sleep quality in the future.
