Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Belmont Athletic Burnout Scale (BABS), a tool designed to measure mental and emotional exhaustion among athletes at Belmont University. This study aimed to assess the reliability of the BABS through analyses of internal consistency, split-half reliability, inter-item correlations, and item-total correlations. Additionally, the study evaluated the validity of the scale by demonstrating convergent validity with the established Athletic Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ) and concurrent validity through predicting burnout using measures that have already been correlated with burnout, such as the Sources of Sport Confidence (SSC) and the Athletic Identity Questionnaire (AIQ). Data were collected from a sample of Belmont University student-athletes via a Qualtrics survey. Potential extraneous variables, including injuries, were considered. Factors such as injuries were considered as potential extraneous variables. Limitations, including a small and non-diverse sample, are acknowledged, showing the need for future research. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for developing personalized plans to support collegiate athletes' well-being and providing insight into strategies that may reduce burnout.
