Abstract

Due to the heavy saturation of media today, college students are exposed to a plethora of societal standards. These standards impact their perception of their appearance and how often they think about their appearance. This study sought to develop and validate a new measure of appearance monitoring, as well as examine the relationship between appearance monitoring and the academic process. While there are many studies on body esteem, there is limited research on appearance monitoring. This study was investigating how often college students are aware of their appearance and the mental capacity this occupies in their minds. We were also interested in exploring how appearance monitoring could be related to their academic performance in their college courses. This study had 80 items measuring the following constructs: demographics, appearance monitoring, body esteem, objectified body consciousness, academic efficiency and mastering goal orientation. We analyzed our results using Pearson’s r and Cronbach’s Alpha on SPSS. Results and Discussion are forthcoming.
