Abstract
Rhabdoid tumor is a rare pediatric cancer found in either soft tissues or the brain. Typical patients are diagnosed under the age of two and have a twenty percent five-year survival rate. Rhabdoid tumor is an aggressive cancer in need of novel treatment and combination therapies have shown success in both rhabdoid tumors and other cancers. Etoposide is a chemotherapy that results in DNA damage and is commonly used to treat rhabdoid tumors. Vitamin D has been shown to have anticancer effects through interruption of the cell cycle. Based on the success of other combination cancer therapies, we treated rhabdoid tumor cells with combinations of etoposide and vitamin D to see their effect on proliferation and apoptosis. This study reveals a promising new strategy for rhabdoid tumor which is in desperate need of a novel treatment.
