Summary
AI technology is advancing quickly, and students already use it to search for information, complete homework, and much more. Educators have begun conversations about AI use in schools, but often their reactions have been reactive policies rather than embracing these tools and learning how they can be used instructively. Several trends have appeared in public schools, and school district conversations on how AI is being discussed.
This project focuses on ways teachers are currently addressing AI in the classroom and areas where teachers may have missed information in preparation programs. Schools can do more than ban students from using AI for assignments and discipline them if they are caught. Students can be taught how to use AI to be more creative, individualize learning, and develop digital literacy. Utilizing observations from the classroom and existing research about tech in the classroom, three recommendations will be presented for teacher preparation programs to consider as they help future teachers prepare for generative AI.
Schools have the opportunity to move from creating policies as tech advances to being at the forefront of preparing educators.
