Summary
Set within the fragile landscape of the Everglades, the Coastal Resilience Research Institute is conceived as an act of harmony. The building is elevated above the site, allowing water, wildlife, and natural flows to pass freely beneath it while enhancing resilience and safety. A broad canopy roof floats above the structure, filtering intense sun and creating shaded refuge. The roof moderates climate through passive shading, reducing heat gain and improving thermal comfort. Oriented to align with prevailing breezes, the building supports natural cross-ventilation and minimizes reliance on mechanical systems. Its porous edges blur the boundary between interior and exterior, reinforcing a continuous relationship with the surrounding wetland. Defined by material restraint and minimal ground disturbance, the project maintains a light touch on the landscape—yielding to the Everglades and allowing the environment to remain the dominant presence.
