Summary

In popular music, lyrics are often written with the intention of conveying a particular message—an expressive meaning. The lyrics of the song “Oh Ana,” written by the alternative rock band Mother Mother, however, are atypical. Though the band has stated publicly that the lyrics don’t mean anything, many fans feel strongly otherwise due to the lyrics’ suggestive nature. The song’s lyrics are written in the first person and directed at a persona named “Ana.” While who or what “Ana” refers to is a point of interpretation, the lyrics of “Oh Ana” depict characteristic struggles of addiction, like: drastic mood swings and equally drastic changes in self-perception, interrupted by fleeting moments of self-awareness. Through analysis of lyrics and metrical dissonance in two formal sections of “Oh Ana,” I argue that the song communicates a pathological state of internal conflict as the protagonist shifts between delusion and reality regarding “Ana.”
