Summary
Musician wellness is vital to their quality of life and career longevity. However, musicians may not be knowledgeable about health topics, and there is limited literature about musician health literacy. This study had three aims related to wellness of Belmont University’s instrumental music majors. The first aim was to determine the current knowledge gaps among Belmont instrumental music students in five domains: self-care and symptom management, injury prevention, stress reduction, health literacy, and general health information. The second aim was to identify barriers that led to perceived knowledge gaps in these areas, and the third aim was to determine the preferred format of educational materials that could be used to fill knowledge gaps. A Qualtrics survey was used to gather responses and descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data. Seven Belmont instrumental music majors completed the Qualtrics survey. Across all five domains, the most frequently identified barriers to perceived knowledge were a lack of knowledge and pressure to perform at the highest level. Participants identified being least knowledgeable in the domain of self-care and symptom management. They reported stress reduction strategies as the most important topic for future education and preferred learning in an in-person workshop format. Limitations of this study include a small sample size and participants from only one university. Future study recommendations include a larger sample size and exploring the implementation of in-person workshops to fill perceived knowledge gaps.
