Summary

Our proposal seeks to develop and implement a standardized Charge Nurse Interest Survey which will create a structured process for identifying those most interested and best suited for the position of charge for all registered nurses on a local med-surg unit. Nurses on this unit are appointed and eligible to serve in the charge nurse role after six months of experience on the unit. Research shows that charge nurses who demonstrate emotional stability, composure under pressure, strong organizational skills, and proactive planning contribute to improved team functioning and decreased workplace strain (Gottlieb & Gøtzsche-Astrup, 2018).

To clarify the charge nurse role and to solidify leaderships skills, the nurse manager will develop this survey by conducting research that addresses pertinent leadership qualities such as communication, decision-making, teamwork, accountability, and the ability to handle conflict. The nurse manager will utilize the research to frame the survey questions. The survey will then be distributed to the nursing staff through the WorkDay platform. Responses will be reviewed and analyzed within 30 days of administration and available to current staff to revisit.

Placement will be determined based on their interest and the leadership qualities they possess. This will serve as a guide for staff scheduling, thereby supporting a more structured and effective selection process. Expected outcomes are to identify at least six nurse candidates who display the qualities listed. Following this implementation, the interested nurses will have access to educational modules and structured leadership development opportunities.
