Summary
The purpose of this project was to address and increase awareness about the barriers to food security from a Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) perspective through an in-class presentation to Belmont Undergraduate students. Food insecurity, largely impacted by SDOH, is a significant concern because over 44 million Americans faced food insecurity in 2023, displaying a persistent public health crisis (U.S Department of Agriculture, 2025). This presentation included many interactive tools to gather students' baseline understanding, promote discussion questions, and assess student awareness post presentation. Topics included current FI statistics for the US and Nashville, SDOH factors that compound food insecurity, current FI screening methods, groups at highest risk for FI, interventions, and challenges with interventions. Data was gathered through two Menti meters: a word map and a quiz. Further optional feedback gathered from participants demonstrated increased awareness about FI. Project sustainability is supported by providing the presentation to Belmont University faculty as an accessible resource to promote awareness about barriers to food security.
