Summary

Many marginalized communities in Nashville struggle to access varieties of healthcare. Substantive barriers to healthcare can prevent people from accessing care, but if these barriers are removed, ultimately, the Nashville population will develop into an overall healthier community. Throughout the fall, the healthcare Belmont student team learned about nonprofits in the Nashville community and conducted primary and secondary research. Nearing the semester end, the team drafted a Request for Proposal for a $50,000 healthcare grant and sent it out to the Nashville nonprofit community. When the team returned in the spring, they created a grading rubric for the RFPs, and utilized the next 6 weeks to narrow the submissions and eventually choose the grant recipient: Interfaith Dental. Following the grant receival, the student team worked to plan and engage with the organization, in which Belmont students conducted site visits, interviews, and surveys with the marginalized populations benefited by the grant and the work of the receiving organization, positively developing the Nashville community’s overall health and reflecting on the true meaning of generosity.
