Summary

This work is inspired by Dr. Cylita Guy’s children’s book: Chasing Bats and Tracking Rats. This short story functions as the next potential chapter of Guy’s book, focused on the interaction between bird migration and light pollution. Migratory birds are impacted by artificial light because of their needs for navigating and orienting by moonlight. This chapter coalesces the related work of Benjamin Van Doren et. al. into a more easily digestible format. Van Doren’s study spans across 7 years to understand the impact that artificial light at night (ALAN) has on nocturnal animals, with an emphasis on migratory birds. Using the purpose, methods, and results of Van Doren et al’s study, we aim to teach children about how nighttime light installation affects nocturnal bird migration.
