Summary

This project will explore the effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence as a tool for teaching music education, specifically with the application “EarMaster.” Music classrooms and programs across the world are incorporating more technology into their programs every day. An application like EarMaster uses AI to provide real-time feedback and adaptive training for melodic and rhythmic dictation. This self-study project reveals a usability gap. Although the software offers incredible analytical features, the app is quite difficult to use and manage, which may cause frustration in students and hinder progress.

This project will explore whether EarMaster is a reliable source on its own, or if a hybrid approach with a teacher is more adequate. The AI tool provides repetitive practice needed to master aural skills, but it lacks the connection to a human instructor. Findings suggest that the most effective learning occurs with a combination between the AI application and a teacher. A balance between AI and teacher instruction ensures that students receive the fundamental aural skills needed to succeed in music.
