Scrapbooks

Belmont University’s historic scrapbook collection tells the story of Belmont’s history through the students who created these books. Scrapbooks are a unique look into the moment they were created and often include ephemera and information that is available nowhere else. They are rich primary sources that allow the viewer to begin to step into the world they encompass. Our scrapbooks include information about life at Belmont and life in larger Nashville and beyond. From our first documented scrapbook, created by Ms. Pauline King in 1892 to a recent scrapbook creation project completed in 2023, examining Belmont’s scrapbook collection is a unique way to understand our history through the eyes of the creators of these records.

Scrapbooks are also primary sources with complex preservation and access problems. Some of our scrapbooks are so fragile that any study by researchers would pose a danger to them. The books in Belmont’s Digital Repository have been digitized courtesy of a grant Belmont University received through the National Historical Publication & Records Commission, distributed through the Tennessee Historical Records Advisory Board. This is a section of our collection and it will continue to grow as more books are digitized.

To access any of the original scrapbooks, please contact University Special Collections.
