Description
Many people want to create positive change for marginalized communities, but how does one start the process? Communication practitioners would argue one starts by analyzing the intended audience. An effective way of understanding one’s audience is simple in theory and difficult in practice: ask them. The language community members use to describe their wicked problems, their cultural norms, and their lived experiences is proof of their invaluable understanding of their own community identity. Simply put, the language of community members drives the social change process. This presentation will explore the voices of community members from rural Appalachia to Colombia, and how their language created the foundation for positive social change within their own communities.
