Description
Are binge watchers actually zombies? After watching 3 episodes of a Netflix series, passive viewers are confronted with the prompt “Are you still watching?” The choice to “Continue watching” or go “Back” pulls them from the familiar, repetitive nature of media that can both soothe and sway a viewer. Repetition in media can lead to both permanence and change; while some movies or TV series use repeated elements to comfort audiences resistant to change, others use images, sounds, and text to shift an audience’s perspective. This interactive presentation explores pop cultural references to Prince, The Andy Griffith Show, and Stranger Things to understand how repetition both haunts our present moment but still provides the potential for change.
