Description
It is appropriate that we begin this year’s Pre-Symposium Film Festival “Reaching for the Moon” with the German silent film classic Frau im Mond (Woman in the Moon). The result of a collaboration between Director Fritz Lang and his wife screenwriter Thea von Harbou, Frau im Mond is rightly regarded as the “First Scientific Science Fiction Film” because of the way von Harbou worked with a team of technical consultants in order to ground its representation of a trip to the moon in astrophysics theory of the time. In addition to a plot driven by evil businessmen and a love triangle among the scientists, the film’s technical elements also anticipated several important developments in rocketry which would play a role in the space race. German text boxes with English subtitles. Discussion to follow.
