Description
The themes at the heart of Ex Machina, Alex Garland’s 2015 directorial debut, touch on those of every previous film in this festival, making it the perfect film to close the series and lead into the 15th Fall Humanities Symposium, “Machines Made of Words,” in which it will be a focus of the opening lecture, “Can Machines be Exemplary Persons?” Rare in the degree to which it relies little on special effects, Ex Machina prompts us to recognize that tests of whether a machine can be judged to be an entity with human-like consciousness are likely to have far more to do with the human observer than with the machine being observed. While the sexual content of the film in places may be offensive to some, it is essential to exploring the issues that lie at the heart of the film. Film 8 of the Pre-Symposium International Film Series, “Of (Hu)man and Machine,” co-sponsored by the School of Humanities and the Belmont University Film Society. Discussion to follow.
