Abstract
Through this thesis, I will explore the characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is a diagnosis of individuals that commonly receive music therapy services in the school setting. I will gain a greater understanding of the diagnosis, including its neurological and behavioral effects. I will also study how music therapy can aid in the development of communication and social functioning for students on the Autism Spectrum. I will explore, on a broad level, the approaches used in music therapy when working with children with this diagnosis. Then, more specifically, I will find which music therapy interventions are commonly used to reach these particular goals. I will seek to answer questions such as: Which approaches and interventions are most effective in developing communication and social skills? Are there different interventions not cited in current research that could be equally beneficial?
