Abstract

In an era of continuous workforce evolution, Generation Z (Gen Z), under age 25 and coming on strong, has emerged as a prominent force, presenting organizations with a twofold challenge: accommodate Gen Z's distinct workplace preferences and confront the demographic reality of this generation's comparatively smaller size.

As higher education administrators have been proactive in anticipating the hurdles posed by declining birth rates and the subsequent enrollment cliff(s), we have acknowledged the necessity of adapting to an evolving student demographic. This adaptation involves expanding educational offerings to engage a digitally native generation grappling with unprecedented mental health challenges, financial uncertainties and an earnest quest for purpose and significance in their professional and home lives.

Adding to their uncertainty is that 2024 will be for many Gen Zers the first time they vote, and they feel the effects of a polarizing political climate and presidential election.

In this context, we offer insights from our experience with the higher education "enrollment cliff" to shed light on effective strategies for employers in anticipation of the resulting "workforce cliff."
