Date of Award

Abstract
This thesis examines how Tolkien drew upon Northern Courage, Ofermod, Comitatus, and Þræll to illustrate armed conflict in his Legendarium. In pursuit of this task, the author portrays how these principles manifest themselves in the Northern European texts Tolkien was most familiar with as a Professor of Anglo-Saxon Literature. Building upon this knowledge base, these principles are applied to contemporary forms of armed conflict, state sanctioned violence, and the contemporary warfighter condition.
