Abstract

Introduction

To address the identified gap in emergency preparedness education and training among nursing students at a teaching hospital in southern India, a private university in the southeastern United States partnered with the site to develop a quality improvement initiative aimed at strengthening these skills. Nursing students at the partner hospital have limited access to simulation-based training opportunities due to constraints in both curriculum and availability of simulation resources. This lack of exposure may hinder the development of critical emergency preparedness competencies

Methods

Educational content focused on triage and basic life support (BLS). One hundred twenty-four students participated in the QI project. Participants completed a pre-intervention knowledge assessment, an approximately two-hour lecture, and a simulated learning experience.

Results

Post-test scores (n = 76, M = 6.64, SD = 1.17) were significantly higher than pre-test scores (n = 112, M = 5.08, SD = 1.35), t(186) = 8.21, p < .001, 95% CI [1.19, 1.94]. The effect size was large, Cohen’s d = 1.28, 96% CI [0.90, 1.54]. Students also completed a three-item post-intervention student perception survey. For Item 1 (perceived value to future practice), 98.7% strongly agreed and 1.3% somewhat agreed. For Item 2 (confidence in responding to emergency scenarios), 96.1% strongly agreed and 3.9% somewhat agreed. For Item 3 (perceived improvement in emergency preparedness competency), 93.5% strongly agreed and 6.5% somewhat agreed.

Discussion

The results demonstrate that the education remained effective and well-valued, even in the absence of extensive infrastructure or high-fidelity resources.
