Abstract
Empathy is an important trait to have when maintaining positive interpersonal relationships because it can foster social support needed for positive mental and physical health (Yang, 2020; Guariglia, 2023). Researchers have looked at various areas of empathy that may contribute to not only sharing emotional experiences but also other areas of prosocial interactions (Davis, 2017; Cameron et al., 2019). Personality traits that promote prosocial, such as openness and conscientiousness may contribute to the underlying mechanism for empathy (Acedo-Carmona, 2016; Song & Shi, 2017). In this online study, 50 undergraduate students completed an online Qualtrics survey where they answered questions related to empathy, social satisfaction, and personality. The expected results show a positive relationship between Perth empathy scores and social satisfaction scores. Participants who rated themselves higher in empathy showed higher social satisfaction. Expected mediation analyses showed that participants' openness and conscientiousness aid in maintaining higher social satisfaction scores. The relationship between empathy and social satisfaction may indicate the importance of empathy in maintaining positive outlooks on social relationships. Clinicians may develop a focus on working with individuals to develop the capacity for openness and conscientiousness which can aid in a more positive outlook on interpersonal satisfaction.
