Abstract

This study explores the factors affecting the outcomes of first-round matches in Grand Slam and Masters 1000 tennis tournaments. I focus on the outcomes of lower-ranked players to highlight what may enhance their performance. The substantial financial rewards associated with winning first-round matches, ranging from $30,000 to $40,000, emphasize the significance of this research. Using match data analysis from the ATP, the study uncovers the statistics and variables that affect match outcomes. By addressing important questions regarding what determines success in first-round matches, the research provides new insights and knowledge while providing actionable insights for players and their strategies. The findings highlight the importance of strategic decision-making to optimize player performance in professional tennis. By offering empirical insights into the factors driving success in first-round matches, this research aims to empower lower-ranked players to capitalize on opportunities. Ultimately, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamics of elite tennis competition and offers pathways for enhancing player performance and career advancement.
