Abstract

Sir Cloudsley Shovell had a reputation as an excellent seaman; he would not have risen to the level of Admiral of the Fleet if it had been otherwise. He was using all of the techniques for determining location that were available at the time, but ultimately they were not good enough, leading to the worst disaster in English maritime history.
