Abstract
Families are forever. Their stories should be too, especially in these modern days of transient and rootless societies. The functions of family stories are much more complex than offering little tots a laugh or taking adults on a stroll down memory lane. Their functions are not only to preserve the family history and strengthen family bonds, but also “to express regional, family and personal identity…teach values, develop a shared humor, and shape a collective experience…” (Zeitlin, Kotkin and Baker n.p.). Family folklore binds families together and creates root systems that both anchor each individual firmly to tradition and create a group identity.
