Abstract

The written and spoken word can do a great many things in the cause of liberation. Words can help people figure out their own situation and develop ways to cope and to improve their lives. One can learn to “speak truth to power,” as they say, it being a very powerful thing to point out injustices and hypocrisy. Words can motivate others to participate in a movement to help one another and make the world a better place. When the liberating voices come together into a chorus and form a movement – let’s call it a liberation movement – we like to cheer. Whether it is our own Founding Fathers, the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, Gandhi’s call for the independence of India, or even the revolutionaries of the Arab Spring, we love to listen to the voices of liberation and cheer for their victories.
