Abstract
Reading is supposed to be an adventure: a doorway, a window, a magic portal through which the reader can experience vicariously the labors of Hercules, the sea journey of Ishmael, the epic quest of Frodo. We return to the world refreshed, edified, and most importantly, whole. Th e visions stoked by characters, vivid as they are, must ultimately be put away as we abandon the dream of fiction and resume our waking lives. Reading in the fiction of Steven Millhauser is similarly adventurous. But the narrative dream is never entirely dispelled.
