Abstract
The following is the account of a work in progress: a three-act opera based on Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion (1817). Douglas Murray (the librettist) and Rachel deVore Fogarty (the composer) began their collaboration in April 2010 with a plan to create the first opera based on an Austen book. In their presentation at the Belmont Humanities Symposium in October 2010, they discussed how their poetical and musical decisions—and borrowings from previous works—will transmit Austen’s text to the stage.
